The rather splendid documentary movie Twenty Feet From Stardom, in which award-winning director Morgan Neville shines a spotlight on the backup singers behind some of the greatest musical stars of the past 50 years, has made it to DVD.
The 90-minute film is both a tribute to the unsung voices who brought shape and style to popular music and a reflection on the conflicts, sacrifices and rewards of a career spent harmonizing with others. Along with rare archival footage and a great soundtrack, the film features intimate interviews with such as Springsteen, Stevie Wonder, Mick Jagger and Sting plus a whole heap of wonderful background singers – names like Darlene Love, Lisa Fischer, Tata Vega, David Lasley, Susaye Green, Lyn Mabry, Merry Clayton, the Waters family and more.
Lucky us, we have three copies to give away to deserving Echoes folk. All you need to do is email us at editor@echoesmagazine.co.uk, tell us your name and address and answer the question, ‘On which label did Tata Vega make her own solo debut? And you could be in the winner’s circle. Or, of course, still outside watching all those gorgeous, well-dressed people with a DVD in their hands and laughing in your face while they sip champagne. Life turns out like that sometimes.
